Thomas Hunt Morgan: The Pioneer of Genetics
Early Life and Education
Thomas Hunt Morgan was born on September 25, 1866, in Lexington, Kentucky. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a teacher. Morgan showed an early interest in science, and he began studying zoology at the University of Kentucky at the age of 16. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1886 and went on to earn a Ph.D. in zoology from Johns Hopkins University in 1890.

Early Career
After earning his Ph.D., Morgan taught zoology at Bryn Mawr College and Columbia University. In 1904, he became the head of the Department of Zoology at Columbia University. Morgan's early research focused on embryology, but he soon became interested in genetics.
Work on Drosophila melanogaster
In 1908, Morgan began working with the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Drosophila is a small, easy-to-breed fly that is ideal for genetic research. Morgan and his students used Drosophila to study a variety of genetic phenomena, including sex-linked inheritance, linkage, and crossing-over.
Morgan's work on Drosophila helped to establish the chromosome theory of inheritance. This theory states that genes are located on chromosomes and that the inheritance of traits is determined by the組み合わせof alleles that an offspring inherits from its parents.
Nobel Prize and Later Career
In 1933, Morgan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the genetics of Drosophila melanogaster. He continued to work on genetics until his death in 1945.
Legacy
Thomas Hunt Morgan is considered to be one of the founders of modern genetics. His work on the genetics of Drosophila melanogaster helped to establish the chromosome theory of inheritance and provided a foundation for future research in genetics. Morgan's legacy continues to inspire scientists today.
