By Steven M. Emmanuel
Hermann Cohen (1842-1918) was one of the most important philosophers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A leading figure in the Neo-Kantian movement, Cohen developed a new critical idealism that sought to reconcile the insights of Kant with the demands of modern science and culture.
Cohen was born in Coswig, Germany, on July 4, 1842. He studied at the universities of Breslau, Berlin, and Leipzig, and in 1871 he received his doctorate from the University of Marburg. After teaching at the universities of Breslau and Zurich, Cohen was appointed to a professorship at the University of Marburg in 1876. He remained at Marburg until his death in 1918.
Cohen's philosophical work is divided into two main periods. In his early period, he focused on the philosophy of Kant. In his later period, he developed his own system of critical idealism.
In his early work, Cohen sought to provide a new interpretation of Kant's philosophy. He argued that Kant's critical philosophy was not a skeptical or agnostic philosophy, but rather a philosophy of hope and progress. Cohen believed that Kant's philosophy provided the foundation for a new, more humane and rational society.
In his later work, Cohen developed his own system of critical idealism. This system was based on the idea that the world is not a collection of independent objects, but rather a unified whole that is constituted by our own consciousness. Cohen argued that the world is not something that we can know in itself, but only as it is mediated by our own minds.
Cohen's philosophy has had a profound influence on the development of modern thought. His work has been praised by philosophers as diverse as Martin Heidegger, Edmund Husserl, and Emmanuel Levinas. Cohen's philosophy continues to be a source of inspiration for philosophers and intellectuals today.
