In Mary Ann Mueller's Dear Mom Sniper Vietnam, the author chronicles her journey to uncover the hidden story of her mother's time as a sniper in the Vietnam War. Through letters, interviews, and research, Mueller pieces together the fragments of her mother's past, revealing a tale of courage, resilience, and the enduring power of love.
Mueller's mother, Ann, was a young woman when she enlisted in the Army in 1968. She was assigned to the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and trained as a sniper. Ann was one of the first women to serve as a sniper in the U.S. military, and she went on to serve two tours of duty in Vietnam.
When Ann returned home from Vietnam, she never spoke about her experiences there. Mueller says that her mother was a very private person, and she didn't want to talk about the war. But Mueller always knew that her mother had seen and done things in Vietnam that had changed her life forever.
In 2008, Mueller's mother was diagnosed with cancer. As Ann's health declined, Mueller began to ask her more about her time in Vietnam. Ann was reluctant to talk at first, but eventually she began to share her story with her daughter.
Mueller was stunned by what her mother told her. She had never imagined that her mother had been a sniper in Vietnam. Ann told Mueller about the horrors of war, but she also told her about the camaraderie she had with her fellow soldiers and the pride she felt in serving her country.
Ann died in 2009, but her story lives on in Dear Mom Sniper Vietnam. Mueller's book is a moving and inspiring tribute to her mother and to all the women who have served in the U.S. military.
