Sample Chapter
The following is an excerpt from Chapter 1, "The Origins of the Panzer Division":
The Panzer Division was the brainchild of General Heinz Guderian, who is considered the father of modern armored warfare. Guderian believed that the key to victory in future wars lay in the use of massed armored formations that could break through enemy lines and exploit the breakthrough to wreak havoc behind enemy lines.
In the years leading up to World War II, Guderian developed a number of innovative concepts for the use of armored forces. He emphasized the importance of speed, maneuverability, and combined arms warfare. He also developed new tactics for the use of tanks, including the Blitzkrieg, or "lightning war," which would become the hallmark of German armored operations during the war.
In 1935, Guderian was appointed commander of the 1st Panzer Division, which was the first German unit to be fully equipped with tanks. The 1st Panzer Division quickly became a model for other Panzer units, and its success in the early campaigns of World War II helped to prove the effectiveness of Guderian's theories.
